How to replace the Liftgate and Hood support Strut on 1993-2002 Camaro and Firebird

Posted by Support Staff on 30th May 2017

Note: The Rear Liftgate and Hood are heavy and awkward to hold. A falling Rear Liftgate or Hood could cause serious injuries. Two people should perform this procedure.

Support Struts replacement procedure

  1. Open the rear Rear Liftgate or Hood and support it securely.
  2. On both ends of the Hood strut, and the lower end of the Rear Liftgate strut, use a small screw driver to detach the retain clip and use a Prybar or grasp the strut end and pull sharply to detach it from the vehicle.

  3. On the upper end of the Rear Liftgate strut, pull the rubber cover out of the way and unscrew the Torx-head mounting bolt stud from the rear compartment lid.

4. Installation is the reverse of removal.

Tips:

  1. When removing the Torx-head bolt, it is easy to drop it and loose it down into trim panel. Use extra care to avoid this.
  2. It is also easy to cross thread the Torx-head bolt while installing the new strut - install the strut at the Torx-head bolt end first, then attach at the the snap clip
